Bhutan packing list for families

Bhutan combines high-altitude hiking, cold mornings, and a respectful dress code for temples and dzongs. Here is how I pack for families, including the Tiger's Nest hike, and which months to aim for.

Kristina's notes on Bhutan

  1. Visas are arranged in advance through your tour operator, and Bhutan charges a nightly Sustainable Development Fee with reduced rates for children. Check current rules when you plan.
  2. The Tiger's Nest hike climbs roughly 1,700 feet to about 10,000 feet. Start early, go slowly, and bring real trail shoes. Little ones do best in a carrier.
  3. Dzongs and temples ask for long sleeves and long pants, and many guides prefer collared shirts. Hats come off inside, so pack a layered outfit that works for both.
