Chamonix packing list for families

Chamonix sits beneath Mont Blanc, and its cable cars and glaciers put families in serious mountain conditions any time of year. This list covers ski weeks and summer trips, plus the high-altitude extras both need.

Kristina's notes on Chamonix

  1. Chamonix's ski areas are spread along the valley and linked by buses and a small train. With kids, I choose lodging near the area we'll ski most, and for beginners I like the gentler slopes around Les Houches.
  2. The Aiguille du Midi cable car climbs above 12,000 feet, and it is cold and thin-aired at the top. Bring hats, gloves and sunglasses even in summer, and keep the visit short with little ones.
  3. Chamonix is a year-round trip. Summer brings the Montenvers train to the Mer de Glace glacier, easy family hikes and alpine lakes, so pack layers and sturdy shoes if you visit outside ski season.
