Grand Canyon packing list for families

The Grand Canyon is high desert, so families need warm layers for sunrise and serious sun and water protection for the trails. This is the list I use to keep kids safe and comfortable on the rim and below it.

Kristina's notes on Grand Canyon

  1. The South Rim sits around 7,000 feet, so it's cooler than people expect. Nights are cold most of the year, and snow is common in winter, so pack fleece even for a spring trip.
  2. Inside the canyon it gets much hotter as you descend. With kids, I plan short out-and-back hikes on the Bright Angel or South Kaibab trails and turn around well before anyone is tired, since the climb back up takes about twice as long.
  3. Much of the Rim Trail has no railing. Hold little hands, use a carrier for toddlers, and pick up Junior Ranger books at the visitor center to keep older kids engaged.
