Greece packing list for families

Greece with kids usually pairs a few hot days of ancient sites in Athens with ferry rides out to the islands. Packing for sun, wind, and small boats is what keeps the island hopping easy.

Kristina's notes on Greece

  1. I like to start with two nights in Athens, then head to the islands. See the Acropolis right at opening, because by late morning in summer the marble glare and heat are rough on kids, and the site can close early on extreme heat days.
  2. Island hopping runs on ferries, and the summer meltemi winds can make crossings choppy or shift schedules. I book fast ferries ahead in July and August, pack motion sickness remedies, and leave a buffer day before any flight home.
  3. Keep luggage small. Ferry ports are crowded, bags often go in a shared hold you load yourself, and many island hotels sit up steps or cobbled lanes. Monasteries, including Meteora, expect covered shoulders and knees, so I bring a wrap for each of us.
