Istanbul packing list for families

Istanbul asks for a little more thought in the suitcase, because mosque visits mean modest clothes and plenty of shoes on and off. Here is how I pack for the city with kids, season by season.

Kristina's notes on Istanbul

  1. Mosques ask visitors to cover shoulders and knees, and women and older girls to cover their hair. I pack a light scarf for each of us so we never have to borrow one.
  2. Shoes come off inside mosques, so slip-ons save a lot of time with kids. Mosques also close to visitors during prayer times, so plan around them.
  3. Take a public ferry across the Bosphorus. It is cheap, kids love it, and it is one of the best ways to see the city from the water.
