Kauai packing list for families

Kauai is lush for a reason, so expect passing showers, muddy trails, and very different water on each shore. A few smart packing choices keep the whole family comfortable.

Kristina's notes on Kauai

  1. Kauai's red dirt stains clothes and shoes for good. Pack a darker outfit and older sneakers for hikes and the canyon.
  2. Hāʻena State Park on the north shore requires advance reservations for visitors. Book as soon as your dates are set.
  3. The north shore is usually calm in summer and wild in winter. I base families in Poʻipū in winter for easier swimming.
