Loire Valley packing list for families

The Loire Valley is castles, gardens, and easy bike rides along the river, with plenty of driving in between. Packing for picnics, bikes, and changeable spring weather makes it simple with kids.

Kristina's notes on Loire Valley Châteaux

  1. Two châteaux a day is the most I plan with kids. My favorites for families are Chambord, with its double spiral staircase, Chenonceau over the river, and Clos Lucé in Amboise, where kids can try models of Leonardo da Vinci's inventions.
  2. The Loire à Vélo routes are mostly flat and quiet, and many rental shops offer kids' bikes, trailers, and child seats. Pack padded shorts and a small backpack for picnic lunches.
  3. Châteaux keep shorter hours in winter, and some gardens are at their best only from spring into fall. Check each château's opening times before you plan the day.
