Niseko ski trip packing list for families

Niseko gets more snow than most families have ever skied in, and the cold is a real Hokkaido cold. A few Japan-specific items, plus a little onsen prep, make the trip easy for everyone.

Kristina's notes on Niseko, Japan

  1. Niseko is known for frequent, heavy snowfall, which means a lot of flat light. Pack goggles with a low-light lens for everyone, kids included.
  2. Onsen bathing is done nude after washing at the showers first, and some onsens don't allow visible tattoos. Talk kids through it ahead of time, and look for private family baths if anyone feels shy.
  3. The drive from New Chitose Airport takes a few hours in winter conditions. Book ski school and rentals early for the Christmas and Lunar New Year weeks, which are the busiest in the village.
