Portugal packing list for families

Portugal is a wonderful first multi-stop trip with kids, with short train rides between Lisbon, Porto, and the coast. Steep cobblestone streets, beach days, and island weather all call for slightly different gear, so a thoughtful packing list goes a long way.

Kristina's notes on Portugal

  1. Lisbon to Porto is an easy train ride of about three hours, and the Algarve is reachable by train or a few hours by car from Lisbon. Madeira and the Azores need a flight, so I treat them as their own leg and pack lighter so we can move quickly.
  2. Lisbon and Porto are hilly cities with cobblestones that get slick, even when dry. I pack grippy sneakers for everyone and bring a carrier for little ones, because strollers struggle on the steep lanes.
  3. Pack for two climates. The mainland is warm and dry in summer, while the Azores and Madeira stay milder and can be misty or rainy on any day, so a light rain jacket and a warm layer earn their space.
