Rio de Janeiro packing list for families

Rio is a beach town and a big city at once, with sudden summer storms and mountain views worth waking up early for. Packing light and smart keeps families comfortable and confident here.

Kristina's notes on Rio de Janeiro

  1. Check entry rules early. Brazil has required US citizens to get an e-visa before travel, so confirm the current requirement when you book.
  2. Rio's beach style is simple: swimsuit, cover-up, flip-flops, and very little else. Leave jewelry and extra phones at the hotel, and carry only what you need.
  3. Go up Sugarloaf and Corcovado on the first clear morning you get. Clouds can roll in and hide the views, so I keep those plans flexible.
