Rome packing list for families

Rome is a walking city built on cobblestones and stairs, with dress codes at its most famous sights. Pack for long days on foot, real summer heat, and covered shoulders, and the city opens right up to kids.

Kristina's notes on Rome

  1. Book Colosseum and Vatican Museums tickets ahead with timed entry. Kids handle a two-hour guided visit far better than a long line in the sun.
  2. The Vatican and most churches ask for covered shoulders and knees, and that applies to kids too. I tuck a light scarf and a pair of shorts that hit the knee into every day bag.
  3. Rome's public fountains run cold, drinkable water all day, so refill bottles as you go. In summer, plan museums for the morning, a long lunch and rest, then gelato and piazzas after 5.
