Svalbard Arctic expedition packing list for families

A Svalbard expedition is cold, wet, and bright all at once, with Zodiac landings and wildlife watching from the deck. Packing for the conditions on the water matters far more than packing for snow.

Kristina's notes on Svalbard Arctic Expedition

  1. Expedition ships set their own minimum ages for children, and they vary by line and ship. Check this first, before you fall in love with an itinerary.
  2. Summer here usually means highs in the 40s, not snow. Think waterproof layers for wet Zodiac rides rather than heavy ski gear, and ask whether your ship lends parkas and rubber boots, since many do.
  3. The sun never sets in summer, which throws off kids' sleep. I pack eye masks for everyone and keep the cabin curtains closed at bedtime.
