Chiang Mai packing list for families

Chiang Mai mixes temple visits, night markets, and hands-on days at elephant sanctuaries, and each one asks for something different in your bag. Modest, breathable clothes and a spare set for muddy days go a long way.

Kristina's notes on Chiang Mai, Thailand

  1. Choose an ethical elephant sanctuary that doesn't offer riding or shows, and check its age rules before you book. Pack clothes you don't mind getting muddy and a full change for the ride back.
  2. Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees, and you'll take shoes off before going inside. Linen pants and slip-on sandals make temple-hopping with kids much easier.
  3. Air quality can be poor in March and April during burning season. I steer families to November through February, when mornings are cool and the air is clearer.
