Kenya safari packing list for families

A Masai Mara safari asks a lot of a small duffel: cold dawn drives, hot afternoons, and strict bush flight weight limits. Here is exactly what our family brings, and what you can leave at home.

Kristina's notes on Kenya Safari

  1. Bush flights into the Mara have tight luggage limits, often around 33 pounds per person in a soft bag. I pack each child's things in a separate cube so we can share one duffel and stay under.
  2. Kenya bans single-use plastic bags, so skip the zip-top bags for toiletries and use fabric or silicone pouches instead.
  3. Early morning drives are cold in an open vehicle, even in July. A fleece and a warm hat for each child means they actually enjoy the 6 a.m. lion sighting instead of asking to go back.
