Sri Lanka packing list for families

A family trip to Sri Lanka can cover beaches, cool tea country, temples, and safari in one week, and each stop asks for something different. Here is what I pack, and how I time the coasts around two monsoons.

Kristina's notes on Sri Lanka

  1. Sri Lanka has two monsoons, so there is usually a dry coast somewhere. Dec–Apr favors the west and south; summer favors the east coast.
  2. Temples ask for covered shoulders and knees and shoes off, and stone floors get hot by midday. Thin socks in a day bag are my favorite small fix.
  3. Roads are slow and winding, so I build in fewer stops than the map suggests. Yala's main block typically closes for part of Sep–Oct, so check dates if leopards are a priority.
