Sabi Sands and Kruger safari packing list for families

South Africa's private reserves make safari easy for families, with short transfers and lodges that welcome children. Packing still matters, since winter dawns are cold and summer afternoons are steamy.

Kristina's notes on Sabi Sands & Kruger

  1. Sabi Sands is a great first safari for families because many lodges have kids' programs and the leopard sightings are famous. Ask about age rules for game drives, since some lodges arrange private vehicles for younger children.
  2. The area carries a malaria risk, especially in the wet summer months. Talk with your pediatrician well before the trip about whether preventive medication makes sense.
  3. South Africa requires blank passport pages for entry stamps. Check that each passport has at least two fully blank pages and plenty of validity left.
