Switzerland packing list for families

Switzerland is one of the easiest countries to tour by train with kids, from lake towns to mountain villages. The catch is that one day can span warm lakeshore and a freezing summit, so packing the right layers matters more than anywhere else in Europe.

Kristina's notes on Switzerland

  1. Switzerland's trains connect almost everything, and Swiss rail offers luggage forwarding between many stations so you can travel with just daypacks. Kids under 16 traveling with a parent can ride free with the Swiss Family Card, so ask about it when you buy tickets.
  2. Temperature drops quickly with altitude. A warm summer day in Lucerne can be near freezing at the top of a mountain excursion, so I keep a fleece, hat, and gloves in the daypack for every outing up high.
  3. I plan a lake city plus one or two mountain bases rather than moving every night. Mountain weather changes fast, and having a flexible day lets you save the big summit trip for the clearest morning.
